We often get requests to remove the chairs that sit on the stage floor in the standard Roberts Studio Theatre seating configuration (also known as Configuration A). While the chairs are removable, taking them out leaves a large 14" rise between Row A and the stage floor. Having a drop off this high is not compliant with building code when patrons are present in the venue. Another consideration to be mindful of is that removing Row AA removes half of the accessible seats in the venue. The majority of the seating in the Roberts requires steps to get to, and taking away the first row on the floor takes away seats that are otherwise accessible to patrons with mobility issues.
Here are some options if proceeding with the removal of Row AA:
1) The seats can be taken off sale, but the physical chairs remain in the venue, blocking off the step between Row A and the stage deck.
2) Short railings can be attached at the center of Row A. We only have 20ft of railing at the appropriate height for this use case, so a few chairs need to remain on either end of the house as blockers (three on house right and four on house left). Please see some images below of this installation.
